Chapter Six

“Higher!” Doug commanded. The two dragons followed his lead, spiraling into the sky.

He had a squadron again, or the beginnings of one. If this dream lasted long enough, he might just wind up ruling the were-dragons. The thought of him as a ruler sent a shot of smoke streaming from his snout in a chuckle.

When he figured they were high enough, he leveled off to cruise. Yiman, who proved to be a muscular gold and tan dragon, pulled out to flank him on the right.

Ajan, slender and the pale blue of the morning sky, mirrored the move to his left. The next recruit he gained would take up the rear. For some reason, he kept picturing Harna there, her dark scales glistening in the sun as she watched his back. For now, he’d have to remember to keep an eye out behind them. The harrier things might be smart enough to plan an ambush.

From this height, he could see from the City of Light in the east clear beyond the fields to where the forest took over in the west. The tide had come in again. Below, the sea crashed against the base of the cliffs.

No sign of any harriers.

Well, he’d always wanted a chance to be a hero in a real fight. He wasn’t sure this qualified as heroic since he was just roasting a bunch of small pointy-toothed birds, but it was as close as he was likely to get.

When planning this expedition, he hadn’t told Harna the truth, but what the hell.

Since she didn’t exist, it wasn’t like that counted as a lie. He planned on killing as many harriers as he could find, as fast as he could. He was still pissed off about the crash and the deaths of his squad. It made no sense that he should be the chance survivor.

He should have followed them in, the way he was trained.

He should have died with them.

Once this mission was over, he’d have tonight with Harna. He wanted another real fuck, with deep penetration and sweat and screaming and a mind-blowing orgasm.

Maybe two. What surprised him was his body’s insistence that it be Harna. Ajan was cute but definitely not who he wanted.

Getting his rocks off the day before hadn’t helped. He’d thought it would release his frustration but it only added to his guilt. Harna had let him fuck her like it was a chore she had to do. She deserved better than being used like that. He wanted her to respond with enthusiasm.

Like she had in his other dreams. He’d bet plunging into her willing participation in reality would be better than any dream.

Whoa! When had he started thinking of this as reality? No, this was just a drug-induced dream. Just because it was a dream didn’t mean he had to act like a jerk. He’d work out his grief and his anger here, and after a while, he’d wake up to agony and the welcome faces of Wingnut and Jet Wake.
